Welcome to my site!
In case you're new here, I'm a psychiatrist, an author, and an educator. You may have seen my interviews in the media or read my book, The Self-Healing Mind. I've spoken with well-known personalities like Kelly Ripa and former United States Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy. I've also interviewed grassroots mental health heroes like Archie Green and Ashanti Branch. I'm an adjunct faculty member and the psychiatry clerkship director at the University of Houston College of Medicine, and I'm the current chair of the Council on Communications at the American Psychiatric Association.
I write about practical approaches to mental health including self-care, finding fulfillment, getting your motivation back, and how to talk about suicidal thoughts. You can read my articles in Men's Health magazine and in the Washington Post. When I'm not working, I love cooking, supporting the arts, practicing yoga, and going for long runs under the big Texas sky. I live in Houston with my wife and our two dogs.

I believe that with one book, one story, one article, or just one meaningful conversation, we can change the world by improving the way we think about and talk about mental health.
